SportsBusiness Journal a Favorite of Sports Executives

By Frank Angst, About.com

While Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal’s subscriber numbers do not rival Sports Illustrated, the sports industry magazine is considered must-reading by many sports executives.

With 49 issues a year, SportsBusiness Journal supplies readers with information on many different aspects of the sports industry. While expensive at $249 a year, the magazine does offer some special subscription rates and may be available for reading at your school, office, or a library.

Targeted to Sports Executives

According to goals listed by the magazine, SportsBusiness Journal strives to provide news and information on the sports industry geared toward sports executives. The magazine delivers important stories, offers in-depth reports, charts industry trends through easy-to-read statistical charts, and profiles key executives.

Regular columnists cover sports marketing, finance, media, and facilities.

Besides the magazine, some information is available for free at sportsbusinessjournal.com.

Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Group also offers a daily newsletter, SportsBusiness Daily; SportsBusiness Conference Group, an industry leadership conference; the IMG World Congress of Sports; and a resource guide and fact book on sports franchises, sponsors, agencies, facilities, governing bodies, government agencies, and professional providers to the sports industry.

Special Issues

Some of the special issues that SportsBusiness Journal offers annually include its “Forty under 40” Awards, which spotlight young sports industry executives. Landing a spot on the list is considered a major accomplishment in the industry.

The magazine teams with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to present the Continental Airlines Regional Athletic Director of the Year Awards to honor top athletic directors from four regions in groups by NCAA division, NAIA, and junior colleges.

Each year, SportsBusiness Journal also presents the industry’s top movers and shakers in its “50 Most Influential People in Sports Business.”
