Bettman became the NHL’s first commissioner in February 1993.

Background:

Bettman worked for the National Basketball Association for 12 years, advancing to senior vice president and general counsel. Before that, Bettman worked for the New York law firm Proskauer, Rose, Goetz, and Mendelsohn.

NHL Commissioner:

In 2005, Bettman helped change the league’s economics with a new collective bargaining agreement. Bettman also has overseen a tremendous expansion of the league as membership has increased to 30 and the league’s United States teams have more than doubled from 11 to 24.

Under Bettman, the number of players from outside of North America has increased and the league has improved its international appeal. In 1998, NHL players participated in the Winter Olympics for the first time, with its players on six different teams.
